9:00-10:15 am (CST)   Session 1          Finding Your Story

The choice of what story to tell is the most important decision you will make as a writer. Don’t waste valuable time and energy on a story that won’t get published or produced. Is your story character driven? Is it marketable? Are you “milking your genre”? We will discuss personal and marketplace factors you should consider in choosing what story to tell and how to apply the “Hollywood Stress Test” to your story.

10:45-12:00 pm            Session 2          Story Structure Made Easy (High-speed edition)

If you've tried other approaches to the three-act structure but still seem to have difficulty finishing your projects, you’ll discover a tool to help you. We'll break down story, using an adapted version of the “Hollywood Beat Sheet,” which helps you develop an easy-to-use roadmap for your entire story. Learn to stop floundering and start finishing your stories with confidence. (If possible, watch the film Witness, starring Harrison Ford, prior to attending this seminar.)

1:00-2:15 pm                 Session 3          All About Character

The essential building block of any story is unforgettable characters the audience connects to on a deep, emotional level. But how exactly do you create them? Why do some characters seem real while others fall flat? Why do audiences love some and not others? This session will break down the essential elements of how to create great characters, as well as how to reveal true character. You will learn practical tools to help you develop excellent characters that audiences will enjoy and love.

2:45-4:00 pm                 Session 4          Setups, Payoffs, and Using Visual Cues

The worst thing in the world is when you watch a movie or read a novel and know you have been “set up.” Most writers rely on words for their setups, but the real trick is learning how to use visual cues to communicate important story information to your audience. You will explore ways to make your setups invisible and organic, so when you finally pay them off, the audience will be truly surprised and satisfied.
